Keystones
The Keystone Exams are end-of-course assessments designed to assess proficiency in three subjects: Algebra I, Literature and Biology. The Keystone Exams are one component of Pennsylvania's system of high school graduation requirements. Students must receive a score of PROFICIENT or ADVANCED to pass the test. Students who receive a score of BASIC or BELOW BASIC may retake the test a maximum of two additional times to increase their score to PROFICIENT or ADVANCED.
Algebra I is taken the year in which a student takes an Algebra 1 or Algebra 1B course
Literature is taken the year in which a student takes a tenth grade English course
Biology is taken the year in which a student takes the Biology course
PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test)
The PSAT is taken primarily by college bound 11th graders and is administered at the Jim Thorpe Area High School in mid October of each year. Registration begins about a month prior to the exam and is handled in the counseling office.
The PSAT is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). Students who take the PSAT can qualify for National Merit Scholarships (it does not qualify 10th grade students for the scholarship - it is recommended for testing exposure - qualification occurs when the student takes the exam in 11th grade).
SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)
The SAT is generally taken by 11th graders throughout their junior year and by 12th graders typically in the fall of their senior year. Students are required to register online.
The ACT is recommended to be taken by 11th and 12th grade college-bound students. Students are required to register online.
ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery)
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military. It can also help students who do not wish to join the military to identify and explore potential occupations. The ASVAB is currently given at the Jim Thorpe High School DURING the school day in the fall. If a student wishes to take the test outside of school they can either contact a recruiter or contact the guidance office requesting them to contact a recruiter. Registration begins about a month prior to the exam and is handled in the counseling office.
